FAQs

We know you might have a bunch of questions about your future, current, or planned career in the electrical field. So, we've procured a list of FAQs which might help you answer some of your questions below. If you can't find the answer you're looking for here, feel free to contact one of our campuses for more information.

Apprenticeship FAQs - How do I gain an Electrician's Licence?

You must complete a WA recognised apprenticeship in the electrical trades or hold a Tradesmans Right Certificate in the electrical trades.

Apprenticeship FAQs - What is an Electrical Apprenticeship?

An electrical apprenticeship is your pathway to a new and exciting career. You will earn a wage whilst you are undergoing training. Training is based “on the job” whilst working with your employer and “off the job” in a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as the College of Electrical Training.

Apprenticeship FAQs - Who do I speak to about getting started?

If you are looking for an Electrical/Communications apprenticeship, the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network (AASN) providers can help match you to an employer, support you during the sign-up to the training contract and assess your eligibility for Commonwealth Government incentives and Trade Support Loans.

AASN providers can also offer individualised screening, testing, streaming and matching services to help you select the apprenticeship, occupation or training pathway that is most suited to you.

These services will work to ensure you are well-suited to an apprenticeship or traineeship and are the right fit for the job.

If you have already found an employer, contact an AASN provider to talk about getting your apprenticeship/traineeship started, nominating the College of Electrical Training as your preferred Registered Training Provider.

If you haven’t found an employer, contact EGT on (08) 6241 6171.

For more information, or to find an AASN provider in your area, call 13 38 73.

Apprenticeship FAQs - How do I become an electrical apprentice?

You must find a suitable employer to take you on as an apprentice. Enrolling into CET’s pre apprentice course will assist you in securing an apprenticeship as many employers look for people that have completed this course.

Apprenticeship FAQs - How long does an apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeships are generally four years in duration.

Apprenticeship FAQs - How long may I be required to undergo training?

“Off the Job” training takes place at the College of Electrical Training. This training may be in the form of one day a week college attendance or block attendance consisting of five days per week for generally four, two week blocks per annum.

The college training is designed to compliment the day to day training you experience on the job.

Apprentices will be required to return to the college to undertake a Capstone assessment three months before the indentured period concludes.

Apprenticeship FAQs - When do I receive my qualification?

Your Registered Training Organisation (RTO) will issue you with a Certificate once you have completed the following:
  • Completion of “off the job “ training
  • Completed “on the job” training experience, called profiling
  • Completed a Capstone assessment
This certificate is presented to Building and Energy who have the authority to issue your Electrical Trade Licence.

Apprenticeship FAQs - Can I get any financial assistance to help with paying my fees?

You may be eligible to receive a concession discount of up to 30% on your fees if you hold one of the various health care cards. One example is the low income health care card.
To receive the discount the card must be valid at the time a unit commences and have been provided to CET.
