Course content

The course, in line with industry procedures and workplace practices, allows participants to experience control room scenarios and hands-on in-the-field switching operations, and aims to:

  • Provide understanding of hazards associated with switching high voltage equipment;
  • Highlight the dangers to personnel and the damage that can occur to equipment should correct procedures not be followed;
  • Provide participants with knowledge of fault levels and how these are effected by the operation of various high voltage equipment;
  • Provide participants with the knowledge to write switching programs to ensure that high voltage equipment can be safely isolated and earthed for access to work on that equipment.

The simulated switching scenarios will provide active test points and accurate responses from equipment, enabling participants to effectively carry out switching programs and scenarios set by the instructor. Participants will use a wide range of equipment within supervised scenarios providing real-world switching experience and exposure.

Individuals in WA may be eligible to claim a Construction Training Fund (CTF) subsidy for the High Voltage Switching Operation course through a refund arrangement. The subsidy may be available via submission of a paid invoice and statement of attainment, submitted directly to the CTF.

Companies may be eligible to claim the CTF subsidy for their employees if they are captured in the CTF levy scheme.The Constructions Training Fund provides funding support for training eligible workers in the construction industry.

We acknowledge the support of the Construction Training Fund in reducing the costs of training for eligible workers.

Course requirements

Applicants typically must hold a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (Electrical Licence or equivalent) to be eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment for all units delivered. Non-Electricians would receive eight out of the total 12 units on their Statement of Attainment.

Safety boots, long cotton trousers, long-sleeved cotton shirts and safety glasses will be required for the practical switching scenario on the final day of the course.

Course materials

Applicants will be provided with all required reference materials and resources

Certification & assessment

Graduates holding a current WA Unrestricted Electrician’s Licence or equivalent issued in an Australian State or Territory will be issued by Coex Training (RTO code 41119) with a Statement of Attainment for each UET and UEP unit of competency completed.

Total number of units:

  • 8 Units for non-Electrical participants, or
  • 14 Units for Electrical trade qualified participants

Skills recognition

The Coex Skills Recognition process benefits applicants who have undergone prior learning and recognises competencies obtained outside a formal educational or training environment, gained through life or work experience. Competencies currently held by applicants will be formally assessed against each applicable Unit of Competency and may be recognised regardless of how, when and where they were achieved. Skills Recognition is an assessment process and a cost recovery charge will apply.

Coex accepts and provides credit to learners for units of competency and/or modules (unless licensing or regulatory requirements prevent this) where these are evidenced by either AQF certification documentation issued by any other RTO or AQF authorised issuing organisation or an authenticated VET transcript issued by the Registrar.

If you believe you are entitled to Skills Recognition, please contact an administration coordinator at your chosen campus.
