L2A1: If You See Something, Say Something!

1

Workplaces can be stressful and people can be products of a stressful environment. However, that doesn’t mean that people should cut corners, or treat each other in a bad way.

Hazards

Remember – safety is EVERYONES responsibility on site. What this means, is that if someone sees a hazard they should do their best to mitigate or remove it altogether. So, if you happen to see a hazard on site, like a nail sticking out of a noggin, take a few extra seconds to remove it so someone doesn’t cut themselves on it. If it is a much bigger hazards, make sure you inform your tradesperson, or the site manager as quickly as you can. And, don’t’ be afraid to stop work if the hazard is too great to work. This includes even starting work – remember to complete your pre-start and identify all hazards you can.

Bullying

We know, sites can be a bit rough and tumble. But we all know when a joke goes too far, or someone says something offensive or out of line. If this happens, never be afraid to report it. Whilst we’d encourage you to try and sort the issue out directly – by speaking to the individual in question – if you feel it is something nwhich cannot be done, then speak to your field officer, and we can attempt to help you through the situation – in whatever form that takes. Workplaces are meant to be safe – and that includes mentally as well.

Are they ok?

If you happen to notice that someone is having a hard time on site, feel free to ask them if they’re OK. It never hurts to ask, and you might just save someone from doing something which could change their life forever. A caring attitude really helps make a worksite and a workplace go a long way, and makes people want to come to work. So if you see something you think is odd, report it and ask.

So there you have it! A few ways you can stay safe on site – not just physically, but mentally as well – and a few ways you can help others stay safe as well.
