Safety Alert 128 | Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Safety Alert 127 Secondary Asbestos Exposure

Overview

Secondary asbestos exposure happens when workers carry asbestos fibres home on their clothes, skin, or personal items. These fibres easily cling to fabric and hair, making it easy for family members to be exposed without ever visiting a worksite.

Who is at Risk

• Spouses or partners who handle or wash contaminated clothing
• Children, especially those in close physical contact
• Elderly or immunocompromised family members

Even minimal exposure over time can be harmful.

Associated Health Risks

Asbestos exposure can lead to many health risks with diseases and cancers being prevalent in persons who have been exposed.

  • Mesothelioma – A rare cancer caused by asbestos, affecting organ linings. Types include:
    • Pleural (lungs)
    • Peritoneal (abdomen)
    • Pericardial (heart)
    • Testicular.
  • Lung Cancer – Blocks airways and impairs lung function, with symptoms like chronic cough, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
  • Asbestosis – A non-cancerous lung condition caused by scarring from inhaled fibres. It can cause severe breathing issues and lead to organ failure.
  • Pleural Plaques – Thickened areas in the lung lining. These are not symptomatic but signal asbestos exposure and increased risk of illness.

How to Protect Yourself and Others from Exposure:

  • Wear Protective Clothing: Use disposable or designated work clothes and boots.
  • Use Proper PPE: Always wear approved respirators and gloves when working with or around asbestos-containing materials.
  • Follow Decontamination Procedures: Use on-site changing and shower facilities if available.
  • Do Not Wash Work Clothes with Family Laundry: Wash separately using a designated method or service, preferably at the jobsite.
  • Change Out of Work Clothes: Never wear contaminated clothing or boots home.
  • Use Protective Covers: If transporting work gear, use sealed containers or bags and cover car seats to prevent fibre transfer.
