You Have Signed Up As a Host Employer: What's Next?

Host employer mentoring apprentice electricians. Discussing work plans and safety, looking at a hardcopy plan.

Becoming an EGT host employer is one of the most effective ways to build a reliable, skilled electrical workforce while removing the administrative and compliance burden of employing an apprentice directly.

Now that you have signed up, here is what you can expect next.

Step 1: Your Dedicated EGT Field Officer Will Get in Touch

Once your application is received, an EGT Field Officer will contact you to discuss your business, the type of work you undertake, and the skills you need on site. This helps us match you with an apprentice who is the right fit for your team, your project requirements, and your workplace environment.

Your Field Officer is your main point of contact throughout the hosting arrangement and will support you and your apprentice for the duration of the placement.

Step 2: We Identify and Match a Suitable Apprentice

EGT pre-screens all apprentices before they are placed with a host employer. This includes:

  • Assessing work readiness
  • Reviewing training progress
  • Ensuring safety inductions are complete
  • Confirming licences, PPE and required documentation
  • Conducting interviews and reference checks

Once we determine the right apprentice for your business, we will contact you to discuss availability, experience, and start dates.

If you need more than one apprentice, we can arrange multiple placements or staggered commencement dates.

Step 3: The Apprentice Arrives On Site

Before your apprentice begins, EGT ensures they have:

  • Required PPE
  • A white card
  • Essential safety knowledge
  • Understanding of workplace expectations
  • CET training schedule details
  • Up-to-date employment and HR documentation

On their first day, we recommend inducting them as you would any new worker - site hazards, sign-in processes, safety protocols, and any specific tools or equipment they will be using.

Your Field Officer will also check in early in the placement to ensure the apprentice has settled in.

Step 4: Ongoing Support and Training

EGT manages all employment responsibilities, allowing you to focus on running your business and training your apprentice. Throughout the placement, EGT handles:

  • Payroll and entitlements
  • Performance management
  • Training coordination with CET
  • Safety compliance and monitoring
  • Apprentice wellbeing and support

If you ever have concerns about attendance, performance, skill development, or behaviour, your Field Officer will address it promptly and directly with the apprentice.

Step 5: Regular Site Visits and Progress Reviews

Your Field Officer will conduct routine on-site visits to monitor progress, ensure safety standards are met, and support both you and the apprentice. We also gather feedback from hosts to help guide the apprentice’s development and ensure they are meeting industry expectations.

Step 6: Completion, Rotation, or Continuing On

Many host employers choose to keep their apprentice long-term, while others prefer short-term workforce support for busy periods or major project cycles. Based on your preferences and workload, you can rotate out apprentices or keep an apprentice for their entire apprenticeship.

Step 7: What Happens When Your Apprentice Graduates

When your apprentice completes their Certificate III in Electrotechnology and all licensing requirements, they officially graduate as a qualified electrician. At this point, you can choose to offer them a full-time role directly with your business, benefiting from a fully qualified new hire that you can trust. Many host employers choose to retain their apprentice, as they have already gained extensive on-the-job experience, understand the workflow of the business, and are ready to contribute as fully qualified electrician. If you prefer not to take them on permanently, EGT manages the transition, ensuring both you and the apprentice are supported through the final stages of the apprenticeship.
