Boosting Construction Careers: WA's $52.3 Million Investment in Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships Funding

In an ambitious move to fortify the building and construction sector, the Cook Labor Government has earmarked a substantial $52.3 million in the 2024-25 State Budget for apprenticeship and training initiatives in Western Australia. This funding aims to address the critical skills shortage and expedite the construction of new homes.

The investment introduces several key financial incentives aimed at attracting and retaining apprentices. Notable among these is the Apprenticeship Support Package, amounting to $21.2 million, which expands on the previously successful Apprentice Completion Grant program. Apprentices can now receive $1,000 milestone payments upon achieving key training stages, with the potential to claim these funds up to a year after completion.

Furthermore, the government has upgraded the Apprentice Tool Allowance with an additional $16 million. This enhancement entitles eligible apprentices to a $1,000 rebate for purchasing essential tools and safety equipment at both the commencement and completion of their training.

Employers are also set to benefit significantly. The budget provides increased grants to those hiring apprentices, especially encouraging the employment of female and mature-aged trainees by doubling bonus rates from 20% to 40%. Additionally, $5 million is allocated to enhance the facilities and equipment of private registered training organizations (RTOs).

With these comprehensive measures, the Cook Government is not only aiming to boost workforce numbers but also ensuring that apprentices have the necessary support to commence and complete their training, thereby securing a robust future for Western Australia's booming construction industry.
