Five apprentices put their technical skills, knowledge and experience to the test at the WorldSkills Electrotechnology regional competition, held at Balga TAFE on 21 October.

The competition brought together emerging electrical talent for a six-hour practical challenge, with competitors required to complete an electrical installation under competition conditions.

Their work was assessed by a panel of industry professionals, including EGT Group Training Organisation Manager Gary Livett, who served as Regional Chief Judge for Electrotechnology.

WorldSkills provides apprentices with an opportunity to demonstrate their technical ability, perform to a high standard under pressure and challenge themselves beyond their everyday training.

Throughout the six-hour competition, participants were required to apply their knowledge, practical skills and attention to detail to complete the installation task. The judging panel assessed their work against the competition requirements, recognising the precision, workmanship and technical capability needed to succeed in the electrical industry.

All competitors performed exceptionally well, demonstrating the commitment and professionalism of the next generation of electrical tradespeople.

The competition delivered an outstanding result for EGT, with two of our apprentices finishing in the top three. Mitch Byrne took first place, while EGT apprentices Callum McGregor and Phillip Siljeg secured second and third place respectively.

The results recognise the hard work and dedication each competitor has invested in developing their trade skills. EGT congratulates Callum and Phillip on their outstanding achievements, as well as all participants who took part in the competition.

For Mitch Byrne, the result marks the next step in his WorldSkills journey. As the regional winner, Mitch will progress to the national championships in Adelaide, where he will compete against some of Australia's leading electrical apprentices.

Success at the national level could open the door to international competition and the opportunity to represent Australia on the world stage. It is an exciting pathway that rewards technical excellence and encourages apprentices to continue developing their skills throughout their careers.

Competitions such as WorldSkills play an important role in recognising emerging talent and encouraging excellence across the electrotechnology industry. They give apprentices the opportunity to challenge themselves, learn from the experience and benchmark their skills against their peers.

EGT is proud to see its apprentices embrace opportunities that support their professional development and showcase the strength of vocational training in Western Australia.

Congratulations to Callum, Phillip and all competitors on a successful day at Balga TAFE. We wish Mitch every success as he prepares for the national championships in Adelaide.
