Workplace Mental Health

In Australia, approximately one in six workers experience mental illness, with common conditions including depression and anxiety. These mental health challenges can significantly affect various aspects of life, including the workplace, where they may impact productivity, attendance, and overall performance. To support our apprentices and host employers, we are committed to creating a proactive, supportive environment that addresses mental health needs.

Contributing Factors:

One major contributor to workplace mental health issues is work-related stress. Stress can occur when job demands exceed your abilities or knowledge, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed. If not managed, this stress may develop into more serious conditions like anxiety or depression. While stress is a normal part of work, it can be effectively managed to prevent it from impacting your mental health.

Recommendations

Supporting your mental health at work:

  • Communicate: Reach out to your manager or field officer if you’re feeling overwhelmed, and discuss any concerns you have.
  • Work-life balance: Prioritise a healthy work-life balance to manage stress and recharge your energy.
  • Build connections: Foster supportive relationships with colleagues to create a network of understanding and encouragement.
  • Seek support:  As an EGT apprentice you can access our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or other mental health support lines if you need additional assistance.
  • Stress management: Incorporate stress management techniques such as physical activity, breathing exercises, or methods that work best for you.

You can access EGT's confidential EAP service, Ashcliffe Psychology, on the following number: 0455 455 855

Their experienced counsellors can speak with you confidentially about any challenges impacting your personal or work life.

Other Australian organisations also offer free, confidential mental health support and counselling services. In an emergency, please dial 000. Additional helpful support lines include:

  • Mates in Construction: 1300 642 111
