Protect your Hands

Welcome back to week two of July! We hope you’re staying safe and warm!
Chances are, you can’t do your job without your hands. If you’re an apprentice, we know that’s the case. From handling stuff, to pulling wires, even just sweeping up, you need hands to do it all. That's why taking proper care of them should be your top priority.
In the fast-paced and dynamic environment of a construction site, your hands can be exposed to myriad risks, including cuts, burns, and crushing injuries. Here's a quick guide on how to protect your hard-working mitts from unnecessary damage.
Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Your first line of defence is a good pair of safety gloves. The type of glove matters, folks. Cut-resistant gloves can protect you from sharp objects, while heat-resistant gloves are essential for handling hot materials. Not to mention if you’re working as a sparky, you need to make sure they meet the relevant standards to electrical work.
Hand Tool Safety
Always check tools for any damage before use. Remember, a faulty tool is worse than no tool at all. And when using tools, keep your digits away from the business end - it's common sense but easily forgotten!
Proper Training
Training and supervision is critical to making sure you’re working effectively and correctly. Ensure you're properly trained on equipment use and safety protocols. And remember - ask for training if you're unsure - it's not worth risking your fingers.
Cleanliness
Keep your work area clean. An uncluttered space equals fewer accidents. That means sweeping up, picking up that chicken treat wrapper and putting it in the bin, ensuring your work area is clear of trip or fall hazards before you start work.
Finally, always keep your hands in sight, and remember to rest them whenever possible. After all, a tired hand is more prone to mistakes. So look after your hands, because without them, the job's not getting done.
