Safety Alert 131 - Mental Health Week

This week, from 4 to 11 of October, is Mental Health Week, with World Mental Health Day taking place on Friday 10 October. It is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of mental health and well-being for everyone. It’s a reminder that mental health is just as important as physical health, and it affects how we think, feel, and act every day.
What is Mental Health Week?
Mental Health Week is a time to raise awareness about mental wellbeing and reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects:
- How we handle stress
- How we relate to others
- How we make decisions
- Our ability to focus, work, and function day-to-day
Everyone has mental health, and just like physical health, it can change over time. Mental health challenges can affect anyone at any stage of life, and they are nothing to be ashamed of.
What is World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is on 10 October every year and is a global initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO). It’s aim is to raise awareness, drive change, and promote a greater understanding of mental health around the world.
This day encourages everyone to:
- Check in: Take a moment to reflect on how you are feeling, and if a colleague seems off, a simple “are you ok” can go a long way
- Take a break: If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, stepping away from your computer to get some fresh air or a quiet moment can be beneficial and can also boost focus
- Reach out: Whether it’s a friend at work, your manager, or a wellbeing contact, don’t hesitate to speak up if you’re feeling overwhelmed. We’re here to support each other.
Why this Week Matters
Mental Health Week is about:
- Starting conversations- Breaking the stigma around mental illness
- Sharing support- Encouraging people to speak up and reach out
- Learning- Understanding the signs of poor mental health and how to respond
- Creating safer environments- At work, at home, and in the community

As part of Mental Health Week, we are proud to introduce the Mental Health Awards, recognising individuals across EGT who have gone above and beyond to support the well-being of others. These awards honour those who:
