Safety Alert 132 - End of Year Safety

Staying Safe This Christmas Break

As we approach the end of the year and the Christmas shutdown period, we want to remind
everyone to stay focused, stay safe, and avoid complacency. The final weeks leading up to
the break can be busy, rushed, and mentally tiring, which is exactly when incidents are most
likely to occur.

Your safety is our priority. Please take a moment to read the reminders below.

1. Heat Safety – Stay Cool, Stay Hydrated

Summer in WA can be extreme. Working in ceilings, roof spaces, plant rooms, outdoor
areas, or enclosed spaces can quickly become dangerous.

Remember:
✔ Drink water regularly — before, during, and after work
✔ Take scheduled breaks in shaded or cooled areas
✔ Never enter a hot ceiling space without checking temperatures and following your host
employer’s safe work procedures
✔ Recognise signs of heat stress (Dizziness, nausea, headaches, excessive sweating,
confusion)
✔ Tell your supervisor immediately if you or a workmate feels unwell
Heat-related illness can escalate fast. Don’t push through it.

2. Driving Safely Over the Holidays

Many people will be travelling over Christmas for work, family events, or holidays. Road
accidents increase significantly at this time of year.

Stay safe by:
✔ Ensuring you are well rested before driving
✔ Avoiding speeding and aggressive driving
✔ Taking breaks every two hours on long trips
✔ Ignoring your phone — no text or notification is worth it
✔ Watching for fatigue, especially after big days at work
✔ Never driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
If you’re not fit to drive, don’t. Your safety and the safety of others come first.

3. Finish the Year Strong – Don’t Become Complacent

The final stretch before shutdown is when many people mentally “clock off” early, and this is
when incidents spike.

As you finish the year, remember:
✔ Follow all SWMS, JHAs and site rules exactly as you would any other time
✔ Keep your mind on the task — distractions lead to mistakes
✔ Never take shortcuts
✔ Speak up if something doesn’t look right
✔ Maintain your PPE and use it properly
✔ Keep good housekeeping — trip hazards increase when people rush
Your actions in the final days matter just as much as the first days of the year.

4. Look After Yourself and Your Mates

Electrical work remains high-risk right up until the last job of the year. Check in with your
workmates, communicate clearly, and support each other to stay safe.

If something feels unsafe — stop and ask.
