What is a Field Officer and how do they support host employers?

When you host an electrical apprentice through Electrical Group Training (EGT), you’re not managing the apprenticeship on your own. A key part of EGT’s host employer model is the Field Officer, who supports both the apprentice and the host business throughout the placement.

Think of a Field Officer as your ongoing apprenticeship support contact. They help keep communication clear, training structured, and issues addressed early so the placement stays productive and safe.

What is a Field Officer?

An EGT Field Officer is your ongoing point of contact for the placement. EGT describes the role as a support mechanism for both host employers and apprentices, providing a continuous contact point and duty of care while helping the apprenticeship run smoothly.

Field Officers support host employers and apprentices by assisting with induction training, providing advice on training plans and supervisor expectations, helping integrate off-the-job training with on-the-job work, and providing workplace health and safety information and guidance.

They also act as a practical link between the host employer, the apprentice, and the training stakeholders involved in the apprenticeship, including the Registered Training Organisation.

How Field Officers support host employers day to day

Hosting an apprentice is primarily about building skills on the job, but it also involves coordination and planning so the apprentice gets the breadth of experience required for their qualification. EGT’s host employer guidance makes it clear that hosts provide supervision, on-the-job experience, and time to attend off-the-job training, and that hosts also have access to an EGT Field Officer who may visit the workplace as required.

In practice, Field Officers help by checking in regularly, monitoring progress, and supporting both the host and apprentice to keep training on track. EGT also describes routine on-site visits as part of the ongoing support model, including progress reviews and feedback from hosts to guide development.

Support when performance or attendance issues come up

Apprentices are still learning, and sometimes issues arise around attendance, communication, or workplace expectations. EGT’s host employer information states that if you have concerns about attendance, performance, skill development or behaviour, your Field Officer will address those concerns promptly and directly with the apprentice.

EGT also describes Field Officers as providing mentoring and coaching to apprentices, including around attitude and performance.

Because EGT is the legal employer in the group training arrangement, EGT manages employment responsibilities and performance management as part of its support model, while the host focuses on supervision and on-the-job training.

Safety and training oversight

Safety is central to electrical work, and EGT builds safety support into its host employer model. EGT’s FAQs describe “safety and compliance” support, including helping hosts maintain a safe workplace and ensuring WHS requirements are met.

EGT also states Field Officers provide workplace health and safety information and guidance, and that they seek feedback from new apprentices on the quality of training they are receiving.

This helps reinforce that the placement remains safe, productive, and aligned with the expectations of the training contract.

How this reduces workload and risk for your business

EGT positions its host employer model as end-to-end support, where you provide the day-to-day supervision, safe work environment and on-the-job experience, while EGT manages the employer-side administration and compliance.

That structure reduces the amount of employment administration a host needs to carry, and gives you a clear support channel through your Field Officer for training, performance and safety questions.

A true partnership

Field Officers are a core part of EGT’s support model. They provide regular contact, practical on-site support, and a clear point of escalation when questions or issues arise, helping host employers and apprentices get the most out of the placement.

If you’d like to learn more about becoming a host employer, or how field officer support works in practice for your business, contact the EGT team or request an apprentice through the host employer page.
